About the Show

Democracy: Terms and Conditions Apply began as a question: what if the worst winter in American democracy had a pit orchestra? The answer is a full concept album of 23 original songs — written, produced, and recorded over the course of a year — spanning every genre Broadway ever invented, from barbershop quartet to Hamilton-style rap to Gilbert and Sullivan patter.

Most new musicals reach producers as a piano demo and a hopeful pitch. This one arrives as a finished album you can listen to end to end — a proof of concept for a show built to be staged. One natural direction: a production built around a wall of LED backdrops, turning the set into a living newsfeed, where the chyrons, tweets, and livestreams that drove these sixty-four days become the scenery. The screen that radicalized the country could become the stage it plays out on.

The thesis underneath the comedy is serious. This isn’t a show about a single bad day — it’s about the slow, absurd, sixty-four-day failure of every institution and safeguard that was supposed to hold, and the genuine people who got swept up along the way. It skewers everyone, because everyone earned it. The laugh and the unease are meant to arrive together.
